Purpose

Provides educational mentoring and disciplinary supervision to secondary school students who work in an online environment; performs related work as required.



Performance Responsibilities

The primary function of an employee in this class is to assist online teachers and administrators by providing educational mentoring and supervision of an online program for designated secondary school students. The position provides monitoring and mentoring instruction for students. The position is supervised by the building principal or assistant principal. The primary duties of the position are performed in a classroom computer lab environment.



Essential Duties

  • Supervise an in-school computer lab classroom;

  • Understand the impact of the educational environment on student learning, self-motivation and positive social interaction and assist in creating a positive learning environment;

  • Collaborate with online teachers, administrators and counselors to ensure academic and personal growth of students;

  • Monitor and mentor designated students requiring online supervision;

  • Assist students with questions about online assignments and provide tutoring, or other supplemental instruction;

  • Assist online teachers in implementing students? Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 Special Needs accommodations;

  • Assist students with behavior modification, conflict management and resolution, making correct choices, recognizing consequences, and other related social skills;

  • Operate computer lab monitoring software if available;

  • Proctor online Final Exams and ensure academic integrity

  • Prepare and maintain reports related to documentation of student online performance and progress;

  • Provide administrators and counselors with student online performance and progress reports;

  • Perform school grounds, lunchroom, hallway, parking lot, and other monitoring and safety duties, as assigned;

  • Participate in appropriate training, workshop, and in-service programs;

  • Maintain student and District confidentiality;

  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Knowledge of:

  • Operation of a personal computer and job-related web-based software and hardware;

  • Online educational procedures and objectives, including online coursework monitoring and mentoring, support of student and online teacher communications; classroom management, test proctoring;

  • School and District rules, codes, standards, and expected student behaviors;

  • Behavior modification methods, techniques, and objectives;

  • Basic special education methods and procedures;

Ability to:

  • Follow written and oral instructions and observe District policies and procedures;

  • Operate computer lab equipment and use websites and software programs appropriate to assigned duties;

  • Use computer-based technology to monitor, supervise, and support students;

  • Train students how to maneuver in an online environment while on a computer

  • Mentor students and be the first line of support to answer student online coursework questions;

  • Assist students with all methods of communications to access their online teacher

  • Investigate and resolve student online performance and progress issues;

  • Prepare, maintain, and present student progress reports;

  • Acquire and provide basic classroom services for special needs students, including but not limited to, mentoring, student online coursework pacing, online curriculum implementation, materials preparation, and classroom management;

  • Maintain student and District confidentiality;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, online teachers, local staff members, and other District personnel;

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; and

  • Classroom or other instructional experience is preferred; or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation;

  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and comprehend, review, and prepare a variety of written and text documents and materials;

  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate classroom online instruction equipment and office equipment, including a personal computer;

  • Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to stand or sit for long periods of time, be able to lift up to 20 pounds, and work in a classroom computer lab environment.
