Job description: Job Description:
Assistant Professor, Tenure- Track, Media and Film Studies Program (MFS), Skidmore College
The Media and Film Studies Program (MFS) seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position for a scholar-practitioner specializing in any media discipline or subfield(s). The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2024.
Summary:
The successful candidate will teach 18 credit hours of undergraduate courses a year (roughly 5 courses) in Media and Film Studies. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to teach in Skidmore's General Education curriculum, including the Scribner Seminar for first-years and the , which focuses on power and justice and requires integration of scholarly studies with practice/application. Other commitments will include: advising Media and Film Studies Minors, helping to shape and expand MFS, and college service. The position comes with an attractive start up package to be used for research support and equipment.
Applicants should address how, as scholar-practitioners, their work integrates research-based and sensorial or expressive modalities, and how their hybrid practice translates in the classroom. Our program, which offers a minor in Media and Film, is small and notable for its interdisciplinarity; in line with the values of the liberal arts, minors are expected to integrate studies of media history and culture with their production practice. The minor draws courses from numerous other departments across the liberal arts and fine arts disciplines, while Skidmore's John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative (MDOCS) delivers the bulk of media production courses in MFS. The successful applicant will address how their areas of specialization and potential course offerings might dovetail with and/or help to expand the MFS's current areas of activity and strength. Those who can offer a strong perspective on hybrid practices that bridge media scholarship and media-making (community-based/co-creative forms of inquiry, multimodal scholarship, video essays, etc.) are especially welcomed.
We recognize that diverse perspectives are essential for the integrity and excellence of media fields and of higher education. We welcome candidates from under-represented groups in the discipline as well as individuals with longstanding commitments and enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring, and advising a diverse student populations.
