Associate Project Scientist

Position description

The Department of Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is seeking a qualified individual at the Assistant or Associate rank in the Project Scientist Series to join the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery.



This full-time position is located in the laboratory of Dr. Itzhak Fried, whose research involves the investigations of the neural mechanisms of memory and cognition in humans. The candidate will focus on analyzing electrophysiological data including single neuron activity and local field potentials from human epilepsy patients during a variety of memory and cognitive tasks as well as sleep, examining the relationships between neural signals and behavior, as well as the effects of electrical stimulation on neural signals and cognition. The successful candidate will work on multiple projects in parallel. The candidate will also supervise other researchers involved in these research projects.



Specific responsibilities

Improvising novel analysis techniques to interpret experimental electrophysiological data, guiding ongoing research projects including software and hardware development, supervising students and researchers on current projects, presenting data at scientific events, preparing and submitting manuscripts detailing the results, aiding and potentially submitting grant applications for continued funding.



Qualifications



Required:

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Electrical Engineering, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Physics, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years neuroscience research experience as a postdoctoral fellow or project scientist.

  • Experience in research areas that include systems neuroscience, learning and memory, statistical analysis of neural data, signal processing, machine learning, and mathematical modeling.

  • Knowledge of at least one of MATLAB and Python.

  • Ability to plan long-term timelines, conduct and coordinate multiple projects, and supervise researchers in various stages of projects

  • Willingness to apply for grants or aid in their preparation

Preferred:

  • 8 years of experience as a postdoctoral or project science researcher.

  • Experience designing and analyzing human learning and memory experiments
