Job description: Job Summary



The Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) is seeking a new Division Manager to join the team. As Division Manager, the incumbent provides leadership and direction on all administrative, personnel, and fiscal issues of the division in support of its goals and objectives while managing both the Division and the clinically focused Renal Center at ZSFG. The Division Manager reports to the Division Chief and the Director of Administration and Finance and is delegated substantive decision-making authority. They are directly responsible for the operations of the division. In partnership with Chief and faculty leadership, the incumbent is responsible for developing short and long term needs assessments to appropriately support the division's goals and missions.



The incumbent develops strategic/operational plans, and manages and implements changes within the clinical practices, working through the physicians. The incumbent directs and integrates the overall clinical, business, and revenue operations of the renal services; ensures the consistent delivery of high quality, efficient, coordinated, compliant, and patient-friendly clinical services that are aligned with UCSF, ZSFG, federal, state, and San Francisco Department of Public Health regulations; partners with physician and nursing leaders to make clinical improvements; provides leadership, advice and counsel to supervisors, staff, and faculty; collaborates with the Central Administration team to create the financial structure for the services including utilization of resources, oversight of billing and revenues, formulating operating and capital budgets and establishing internal controls and reviews; and provides operational guidance, direction, and support in the development and enhancement of existing and new clinical programs.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.



For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in business, health care or related area, and six (6) or more years of progressively responsible academic, financial, and clinical operations management experience which includes five or more years of experience hiring and managing high performing employee and / or equivalent experience / training

  • Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy

  • Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; and / or accounting and payroll

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff

  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner

  • Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs

Preferred Qualifications



  • Familiarity with campus and university on-line systems, federal and staff funding agency requirements, state and federal human resource regulations, space and equipment inventory rules and regulations, campus internal audit rules and regulations, the campus business and finance bulletin, academic personnel manual, school and department clinical compensation plan, clinical practice rules and regulations, campus expenditure rules and regulations

  • Familiarity with policies and programmatic guidelines for ACGME training programs and associated funding, institutional guidelines on salary setting for trainees, stipend payments and the appointment process for all trainees (ACGME and non-ACGME fellows)

  • Master's degree in business, health care or related area, OR equivalent education and experience, encompassing financial management, strategic planning and organizational development, clinical practice management, and human resource management

Department Description



The Division of Nephrology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), provides training for medical students, nursing students, NP students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows in the Department of medicine, with programs in research, patient care, teaching and public service; the division is comprised of an inpatient consult service and outpatient dialysis both located at ZSFG, a Laguna Honda Hospital consult service. The division has three additional outpatient dialysis units where patients are seen including Fresenious Kidney Care Potrero hill, Fresenius Kidney Care Ocean Avenue, and Davita Westlake Daly City Dialysis Center. The division of Nephrology consists of approximately 60 faculty, fellows, researchers, and staff, and has annual expenditures of approximately $8.97M. The Division's mission is to expand the frontiers of basic and clinical investigation in kidney disease, training the next generation of academic nephrology leaders and providing the highest level of patient care.
