About UC Blue Ash



The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College invites applications for an Academic Tutor position in our Writing and Study Skills Center. This position is 80%FTE and benefits eligible. The Writing and Study Skills Center (WSSC) offers UCBA students support with writing, reading, study skills, and student success strategies.



The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College is one of the largest regional colleges in Ohio and one of the most diverse colleges at the University of Cincinnati. Job Overview



Reporting to the WSSC Program Manager, the academic tutor supports student learning in writing from a holistic, student-success oriented perspective. The coursework may be from any discipline. The instruction will be conducted through individualized one-on-one or small group sessions delivered in person or online to improve academic performance. The tutor will help foster an environment of continuous improvement and excellence in undergraduate learning and teaching with a diverse population in an open access college.



Average weekly hours will be greater during the Fall and Spring semesters (approx.32-38 hours per week.) Hours are reduced during the summer semester (approx. 28 hours/week) for a total of 1664 hours per year. The working schedule may require evening hours and occasional weekend work at conferences, orientations, open houses, etc.



This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with the option for one remote working day a week during summer terms only. Residence must be within the Cincinnati Tri-State area (OH/IN/KY) with reasonable distance to campus to have the ability to report to campus as required. Remote work arrangements are subject to change in accordance with university policies.



Essential Functions



  • Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring.

  • Guide students who need additional help with designated subject area classwork.

  • Collaborate with faculty to provide supplemental instruction to students seeking assistance.

  • Help students develop study plans and strategies.

  • Participate in staff professional development.

  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Required Education



Bachelor's Degree in English or a related discipline.



Required Experience



One (1) year of teaching or tutoring experience.



Additional Qualifications Considered



  • A Master's degree in English, Creative Writing, Reading, or a related field.

  • Experience teaching or tutoring one or more of the following areas: English as a Second Language, reading, writing study skills, and student success strategies.

  • Willingness to be trained to tutor in relevant areas of support beyond writing.

  • Experience with remedial learning and experience working with potentially unprepared students.

  • Higher education experience.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
