General Description: The Global Development Division develops and implements programs in basic education, vocational and higher education, teacher training and capacity development. Within the TESOL Education practice area, World Learning designs and implements programs around the world contributing to the development of English language educators' teaching skills and English language skills. These programs are funded by an array of government and private organizations and are delivered in face-to-face, blended, and online modalities. The TESOL Education practice area also delivers accredited and non-accredited certificate programs through partner sites located in different parts of the world.

As part of its work and contributing to World Learning's mission, the TESOL Education team will manage the New Vermonter Education Program (NVEP) hosted at the SIT campus. This program provides needed support to Afghan and other refugees as they settle into their new life in the U.S through the development of English communications skills and cultural competencies. In collaboration with the Senior Program Officer the Program Assistant is directly involved in the development, support, and maintenance of the NVEP program.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and maintain initial data files for program participants (electronically and manually) as needed for all Southern Vermont NVEP sites.
  • Assist in facilitating entrance placement assessments for English Language Learners.
  • Support in registering Brattleboro NVEP participants for program services, e.g. VSAC, ellii, Burlington English, etc.
  • Serve as the main POC with participants regarding class registration and enrollment.
  • Manage internal databases for NVEP program sites including tracking of participant attendance, participation and progress, and collect necessary documents from instructors.
  • Provide administrative support by conducting inventory of program teaching supplies and materials and submitting requests for purchase approval.
  • Manage teachers' resource center at MCC.
  • Teach English Language classes as set by SPO.
  • Support Cultural Orientation activities as needed, in collaboration with the SPO.
  • Assist in the administration and coordination of the NVEP volunteer program.
Requirements

Required Experience/Education:
  • Education: BA in Education, Certificate or MA in TESOL, Education preferred
  • Experience: Minimum three years of language program management experience and five years of classroom teaching experience
  • Language: Native-level English language fluency or C2 level in the CERF required. Excellent writing skills required.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge and experience with communicative language teaching methodology; ELT resource materials; American history and culture; use of technology to support the learning purposes
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the location where this position is offered
Required Skills:
  • Cross-cultural speaking skills
  • Effective communication (oral and written) skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of basic MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, and MS Outlook.

  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to take initiative, be creative, flexible, and work independently and know when to ask for advice.
  • Ability to be a team player adapting to rapidly changing situations.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with primary Afghan languages and culture
  • Familiarity with U.S. Government grant management
