In the Department of Emergency Medicine, our mission is to provide and continue to improve the quality of health care services whenever and wherever the patient needs them; to promote scholarly activity regarding emergency health care through education and research; and to maximize the accumulation and utilization of resources in order to accomplish service and scholarly activities, and promote the wellness and satisfaction of department members.
Our tertiary care catchment area includes more than 1.5 million people in eastern North Carolina, many of whom arrive via our integrated mobile critical care and air medical service. Our children's ED opened in July 2012 and the children's hospital opened in June 2013. In September of 2016, we extended our coverage to begin providing professional medical services at ECU Health Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina.
Our current faculty members possess diverse interests and expertise leading to extensive state and national level involvement. The Emergency Medicine residency is well-established and includes 12 EM and 2 EM/IM residents per year.
Job Duties
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC seeks candidates for a fellowship in Emergency Medical Services.
The fellowship will provide graduates with the knowledge and skills to be effective medical directors for ground-based emergency medical services, air medical services and/or critical care transport services.
The local ground EMS System covers a population of 150,000 in a county of 656 sq miles. All EMS agencies are paramedic level and dispatched through an enhanced 911 center. Exposure to more rural and urban experiences is also provided.
In addition, the region has a hospital based air and critical care transport service (ECU Health EastCare) which covers 29 counties in NC, with 5 helicopters (3,600 flights/yr) and 8 BLS, ALS and critical care ground ambulances (4,900 transports/yr). EastCare also completes 1,200 pediatric transports per year and has a specialized neonatal/pediatric team. Training in disaster management with regional teams is also available. The fellow will also perform clinical duties as an attending in our state-of-the-art emergency department, which has resident physicians from our fully accredited Emergency Medicine residency and combined Emergency Medicine/ Internal Medicine training programs.

These are fixed-term faculty position with the title of Clinical Instructor (Clinical Fellow).
Minimum Education/Experience
The successful candidate must have an MD/DO from an appropriately accredited institution.
Physicians must be able to obtain a license to practice medicine in North Carolina; be granted medical staff privileges at ECU Health Medical Center and ECU Health Beaufort Hospital; be approved to practice medicine through ECU Physicians, and receive medical liability insurance coverage through the Brody School of Medicine carrier.
Successful applicants will be board certified or eligible in Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
