Job description: Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a Biological Science with coursework in molecular biology and chemistry. Two years of full-time directly related experience with advanced research related/laboratory activities. Hands-on molecular biology laboratory experience. Experience with both MAC and PC computer platforms, Microsoft Office suite, and computer maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with computer troubleshooting. Experience with gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation and polymerase chain reaction.

Brief Description of Duties:
The incumbent will act as laboratory manager for the Institute. Responsibilities will include the management and preparation of six molecular biology laboratories used for undergraduate, graduate and K-12 teaching (~10-15 courses) as well as summer science research and education programs (10-15). The successful incumbent will have excellent communication skills, willingness to follow specific instructions and the ability to direct others when needed. They will have excellent attention to detail and are thorough in reviewing their work.

Duties:
  • Organize and coordinate all equipment and supplies for six teaching laboratories which house courses, workshops and summer camps.
  • Prepare reagents and other laboratory requirements for teaching and research
  • Maintain all MAC and PC computers, printers and networks for the Institute, including installation and upgrades of software and virus protection.
  • Manage the laboratory and environmental safety program for all Institute permanent (10) and temporary employees (~20 annually); coordinate annual inspection of labs by Environmental Health & Safety and the fire marshal. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining safety standards in all labs and keeping the staff up to date on safety training.
  • Work with faculty to develop new laboratory modules for courses and troubleshoot laboratory protocols as required.
  • Supervise 1-2 graduate and/or undergraduate laboratory aides as necessary.
  • Maintain all equipment in good working order.
  • Other duties as assigned.
