How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Senior Transit Information Installer position is responsible for the application and installation of all pieces of transit information, including bus stop signs, long-term rider alerts, maps, holders, poles, and special installations. The position reports to the Assistant Manager, Transit Information and is responsible for providing work direction to support staff, specifically the Transit Information Installer position, Transit Information Services Support Specialist, and vendors. Additionally, the position will be responsible for:
  • Overseeing inventory and maintaining accurate information within database.
  • Tracking and reordering inventory.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact between Street Operations and municipalities, coordinating routine maintenance of on-street signage.
  • Providing work direction and managing the assignment of daily work and special project work for installation staff.
  • Overseeing ongoing maintenance list and be responsible for the efficient and accurate resolution of issues.
  • Staying on top of upcoming changes and special projects and ensuring staff is available to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Identifying resource needs and work with management to procure necessary equipment.
What you would do in this job

NOTE: This position is open only to current Metropolitan Council employees.

1. Lead the signage implementation of new route information to bus stop signs prior to work pick and for weekly service changes
  • Organize list of changes and schedule staff as needed to apply decals.
  • Lead effort to apply new route information decals to aluminum blanks prior to installation.
  • Verify completed signs match pick or weekly service change information.
2. Lead installation of signage with updated transit information prior to work pick and for weekly service changes.
  • Lead effort to Install new route information at all bus stops that have changes prior to work pick or weekly changes. Arrange support staff as necessary based on volume of installation.
  • Document all completed signs and verify installation matches instructions.
  • Identify specific hardware and tools necessary to perform work at all locations prior to pick. Procure any new tools or hardware in advance of pick in order to perform installation.
3. In consultation with the Field Operations Supervisor, coordinate work assignment for Transit Information installers, including daily work, pick-based work, and special project assignment.
  • Assign daily work and distribute work to Transit Information Installers.
  • Develop work plan for installation staff around audits and special assignments. Review and verify work is complete and accurate.
  • Develop work plan for quarterly service changes and assign and distribute work to Transit Information Installers.
  • Train installation staff. Monitor performance and develop performance coaching strategies as appropriate.
4. Assists Field Operations Supervisor in the planning and leads the implementation of Transit Information systematic signage maintenance and replacement plan.
  • Develop and implement signage maintenance and replacement plan based upon priorities and staffing.
  • Lead audit of on-street signage, coordinating support staff roles and responsibilities.
  • Prioritize installation list and oversee completion of signage and maintenance plan work.
5. Lead installation of additional customer information (e.g., long-term rider alerts, wayfinding signage, and special stop-specific messaging, etc.)
  • Work with the Field Operations Supervisor to develop support and maintenance plan around any new initiatives.
  • Work cooperatively with Marketing and other departments to install customer information on demand. Document locations and verify accuracy of installations. Coordinate removal of all information as appropriate.
  • Make recommendations on hardware choices (e.g., sign blanks, brackets, fasteners) necessary to support installation work.
6. Facilitate communications of signage installation and updated transit information with internal stakeholders and municipalities. Work with stakeholders in defining signage requirements and understanding trends in signage technologies.
  • Align Metro Transit Signage maintenance and replacement plan with these requirements and trends.
  • Coordinate communication between Street Operations and municipalities regarding routine on-street sign maintenance
  • Track inventory and ensure municipalities have sufficient inventory to maintain on-street signage.
  • Maintain database of signage contacts and agreements with municipalities.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
  • High School diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in installation of Metro Transit signs, holders, displays, and poles within the region, along with installation requirements or related experience; AND
  • One (1) year of leadership experience. which may include any of the following: training/mentoring employees, coaching, community leader, military, trainer, project lead, supervisory or management role.
License:
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record

  • Knowledge of Metro Transit's bus stop sign implementation project.
  • Proven ability working independently to meet work tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience working effectively with different departments and stakeholders.
What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of Metro Transit's route system, and operating policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of various hardware and tools necessary for installation of bus stop signs, shelter signs, long-term rider alerts, maps, holders, poles, and special installations.
  • Knowledge of the various forms of hardware used for installations on poles, e.g. banding, ring brackets, tubular brackets.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Excel.
  • intermediate level skill in using DeviceMagic or comparable online database.
  • Skilled in time management and prioritization of tasks.
  • Ability to operate basic hand tools.
  • Ability to lead and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.

Working Conditions:
Ability to work in an environment with loud noise and risk of electrical shock. Works near moving traffic or equipment. Works in wet humid conditions and high precarious places. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme hot.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, bend or stoop for entire eight-hour shift. Ability to lift 50 pounds and exert and force up to and more than 100 pounds.
