Controller
Posted 2025-03-14The primary function of this position is to supervise the Accounting Department to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal regulations and Dover Federal Credit Union Board Policies and Procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, general ledger, regulatory, Management and Board of Director related reporting, processes, and procedures. The Controller... will have complete oversite of the Accounting Department while directly managing the Accounting Team. The Controller provides guidance and training to the Accounting Team in the performance of their duties. Ensure comprehensive, timely, and accurate completion of all critical tasks, to include monthly close entries, reporting and reconciliations. In addition, the Controller will be responsible for the Credit Unions? annual budget, including approval by ALCO and the Board.
Essential Functions
Leadership
? Oversite of the entire Accounting Department to ensure efficiency of operations and financial integrity. Ensure the Credit Union?s accounting procedures, practices, and policies include appropriate controls to mitigate risk, support the organization?s strategic goals, and are also in compliance with GAAP and Regulatory guidelines.
? Assist with hiring and supervision of the Accounting Team and ensure staff is cross-trained on the appropriate Accounting functions to effectively perform the duties of the department.
? Effectively manage the Accounting Team develop each employee to their highest potential through coaching and leadership, ensuring optimal performance by meeting monthly to review previous month?s performance, setting goals for upcoming month?s performance, and developing plans to improve employee?s performance, when needed.
? Assist in the development of the Credit Union?s strategic and tactical financial plans in conjunction with members of the management team. Ensure plans are based on sound, supportable, and documented assumptions based on input from Credit Union leadership. Develops, interprets and implements highly complex financial accounting concepts and advanced techniques for financial planning and control.
? Any other duties as assigned.
Monthly and Quarterly Close Functions
? Develops, manages, and maintains reliable and accurate financial reporting on income, expense, assets, liabilities, and capital. Interprets and presents financial reports to management, appraising operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget for management planning and decision making.
? Prepare special financial analysis as required or as requested by the CFRO and/or Management.
? Prepare monthly financial reports and analyses for presentation to the Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO) and Board.
? Ensure the monthly Financial Highlights are completed for the Executive Committee in accordance with the Board Executive Committee Schedule.
? Responsible for performing analytics of reported data to ensure accuracy and understanding.
? Communicate regularly to the CFRO on the status of the close, especially when finalizing the expected results.
? Ensure the general ledger is closed timely and accurately each month, no longer than five business days of the month following the close date.
? Ensure to review the financials with the CFRO prior to closing the ledger each month.
? Ensure all balance sheet general ledger accounts, and applicable subsidiary ledgers, are reconciled monthly. Manage the timely resolution of all reconciling items and quickly resolve general ledger discrepancies working with other departments as needed.
Budget
? Provide budget oversight, coordinate with other departments during the budget process, and during the year, to ensure timely and accurate projections, including managing the Budget system and providing budget comparative financial statements.
? The Controller will analyze and explain various budget variances to assist in the accuracy and understanding of reported financial statements, including but not limited to the quarterly budget expense variance explanations which are out of policy limits along with the expectations for the remainder of the year to ALCO.
? Responsible for all reporting at various detail levels relating to budget.
Other Duties
? Identify inefficient and outdated processes; recommend improvements if warranted. Coordinate process improvements with other departments to enhance efficiencies within the organization.
? Maintain the Credit Union?s accounting system, including Chart of Accounts, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Investments, Prepaids/Accruals.
? Review and revises accounting policies and procedures and submit any changes warranted accordingly
? Coordinate the collection of data and provide accounting data and information necessary to support audits/exams, or special projects.
? Oversight of Accounting Wire Transfers
? Assist the CFRO with financial processes as necessary and work as liaison to management in their absence.
? Serve as back-up to other accounting functions, as necessary
? Manage and perform other duties and tasks as assigned, including, but not limited to. management requests, department projects and participation in committees, as assigned
