The Society was founded in 1924 to promote the growth and development of plant biology; to encourage and publish research and education in plant biology; and to promote the interests, growth, and education of plant scientists in general.

Summary

The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) is looking for a remote Senior accountant or senior staff accountant to handle accountants payable and benefits administration. Position Overview

The Senior Accountant, Accounts Payables and Benefits Administrator is a key member of a four-person finance team. This role is responsible for managing the organization's accounts payables function, benefits administration, payroll back up, and ensuring accurate and timely processing of vendor invoices and payments. In addition, the person in this role assists the CFO with other operational and confidential administrative tasks. The Senior Accountant will collaborate closely with various departments, vendors, and internal stakeholders to support financial operations and maintain strong financial controls. The Benefits and Retirement part of the role plays a crucial role in managing and administering the employee benefits and retirement programs. This position requires a strong understanding of benefits administration, terminations, retirement plans, and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The person in this role works closely with the CFO to reconcile employer and employee contributions, upload retirement payments to TIAA?s portal bi-weekly, and work with external brokers to ensure the smooth operation and effective delivery of benefits and retirement services.

Responsibilities

As the Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable & Benefits Administrator, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth financial operations of our organization. Your key responsibilities will include:

Accounts Payable Management:
? Oversee the accounts payable process, ensuring accurate and timely processing of invoices, expense reports, and payments.
? Verify transactions, resolve discrepancies, and maintain proper documentation in compliance with accounting standards.
? Collaborate with vendors, suppliers, and internal departments to foster strong relationships and resolve payment-related inquiries.
? The person holding this position serves as back-up for accounts receivable duties.

General Accounting
? Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures, balance sheet account reconciliations, annual audits and audit schedules, and financial reporting.
? Review daily bank transactions and communicate with our bank representatives as necessary.
? Ensure bank transactions are accurately posted to the general ledger.
? Run monthly PayPal reports and communicate with customer service to resolve any discrepancies.
? Review and analyze financial data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvements.
? Work closely with the finance team to support budgeting and forecasting activities.
? Work closely with membership, meetings, and publications to process various vendor invoices, make adjusting entries, answer inquiries from our community.

Benefits Administration
? Assist with managing employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits offerings.
? Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements related to employee benefits.
? Serve as the point of contact for employees regarding benefits-related queries and assist in resolving any issues.
? Process bi-weekly employer and employee contributions.
? Work with external consultants to make sure required communications related to TIAA retirement accounts are sent out to employees.

Qualifications
? Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
? Proven experience (5+ years) in accounts payables management, preference will be given to those with experience working for nonprofit organizations.
? Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
? High ethical standards and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
? Proficiency in accounting software and CRM systems. Experience with Microsoft GP or Microsoft SL is preferred, or other nonprofit accounting software is beneficial.
? Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail.
? Strong organizational and time management abilities, capable of handling multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
? Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
? Solid knowledge of nonprofit financial operations and compliance requirements is desirable.
