Job description: Position Summary: The Student - Peer Writing Tutor works with students individually, in groups, or through the online lab to help them understand and apply course concepts. They encourage students to become independent learners by promoting study and learning strategies aimed at academic progress. Peer writing tutors function as academic role models who support students as they adapt to the demands of college life. They foster a sense of community among students at Cochise College and work cooperatively with other staff members to provide educational activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities: Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position:

Tutors and facilitates one-on-one sessions, group sessions, and workshops either online or face to face

Offers critical feedback on writing assignments

Answers grammar, usage, punctuation, and reading questions as well as questions on MLA

Offers students writing strategies for essays and research papers

Helps student develop a variety of study strategies

Helps students clarify assignments and other material

Participates in workshops and orientations

Attends training sessions held for student staff

Collaborates with tutoring center staff

Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Education and Experience; Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience Requirements:
Enrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summer
Possess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or higher
Completion of ENG 101 and 102 with a grade of "B" or better
Completion of an upper level intensive writing course with a "B" or better preferred
Students attending Cochise College on an F-1 Visa require full-time enrollment with a minimum of 12 credits per semester and six credits in the summer

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures
Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications
Knowledge of the proper operation of and the ability to use personal computers and standard office equipment
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner
Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public
Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and effectively with all types of data
Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work Environment: Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office, classroom or lab setting with appropriate climate controls.

Physical Requirements: Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met

Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem solving skills are important

Part time and student positions are not benefit eligible
