Job Description:

The Libraries and Academic Support Services Department at Madison College has an opportunity for a dedicated individual to fill the role of Student Support Assistant in the Student Achievement Center. This position offers primarily on-site support to regional student achievement centers and libraries. As a member of the team, you will play a vital role in fostering a supportive environment for students? academic success.

In this role you will be responsible for overseeing students working in the Student Achievement Centers (SACs). Additionally, you will offer support to our libraries by assisting with basic reference inquiries and supporting tools for students and student computer held desk questions.

The Student Support Assistant reports to the Manager of the Student Achievement Center and directs the work of casual and/or student employees.

This is a part-time position, offering 20 hours per week for 42 weeks during the academic year from August to May. The schedule entails two (2) days at the Reedsburg Campus and two (2) days at the Portage Campus, with flexible 5-hour shifts Monday through Thursday between 9:00am and 5:00pm, during times of highest student needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Manages the intake desk of the Student Achievement Center. Maintains, troubleshoots, etc. TutorTrac station and software. Ensures students login/out of Tutortrac. Interviews students to determine how best to direct them for support. Supports chat, telephone, and other online services.
  • Supports Libraries and Academic Support Services (LASS) decision-making and strategic planning through day-to-day assistance, and participation in regular staff meetings, membership on internal LASS teams and other participation as needed.
  • Monitors computer lab within the Center. Checks to see if computers, printers, scanners, monitors, etc. are functioning, updated, etc. Responds as needed, or informs Student Help Desk manager.
  • Guides students through questions about tools, software, online resources, etc. Refers students to appropriate resources. Assists with mobile technology needs. Refers to Student Technology Help Desk when appropriate.
  • Assists with library support including helping students with class reserve collection, explaining library services and policy, helping students find material, etc.
  • Promotes Libraries and Academic Support Services through creation of materials, participating in campus/College events, classroom visits, etc.
  • Assists in the hiring, training, and supervising of library student workers and/or directs their workflow in various capacities in technical processing, circulation, and student computer help desk.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of academic support standards, best practices, and principles.
  • Experience with print and online tools and information resources utilized for reference, research, tutoring, etc. [library databases, libguides, tutortrac, brainfuse, etc.]
  • Working knowledge of current computer software, hardware, educational technologies, and other technologies.
  • Ability to work in a team-based, continuous improvement environment.
  • Familiarity with library automation systems and online resources.
Minimum Requirements
  • One (1) year post-secondary
  • One (1) year (2000 hours) of experience directly related to the skills for this position performed in an academic institution.
  • Valid driver?s license as some travel may be necessary.
