DEFINITION:

Upward Bound (UB) is a federally grant funded TRIO program whose purpose is to identify, select, and assist high school students preparing for college and career. The grant serves Heide Trask High School, Pender High School, and Pender Early College High School. This position will provide afterschool tutoring in one or more subject areas: English, Mathematics, Science, or Foreign Language. This is a time-limited role and the selected candidate(s) must be available to work on a part-time basis after school in Pender County on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Tutors will need to commit a minimum of 8-10 hours per month during the school year. Occasional field trip chaperoning may also be needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision from the Director of Upward Bound

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Tutor high school students at Heide Trask and/or Pender High School during after school hours
  • Provide tutoring in one or more subject areas: English, Mathematics, Science (Biology/Chemistry), and/or Foreign Language
  • Facilitate student learning both individually and in small groups
  • Assist students in ?learning how to learn?
  • Maintain knowledge of current high school curricula
  • Attend occasional program meetings and trainings
  • Assist Upward Bound Director and Project Advisor in maintaining accurate record keeping of student attendance
  • Maintain accurate logs for work shifts and payroll timesheets
  • Assist with field trips or cultural experiences as needed
Other Important Functions:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and community
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
  • Understanding of the teaching and learning process
  • Understanding of the designated subject area(s)
Ability To:
  • Possess excellent communication skills, especially verbal and listening skills
  • Possess strong academic skills and ability to foster these skills in students
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  • Making observations
  • Reading and writing
  • Communicating with others
  • Operating assigned equipment
  • Handling varied tasks simultaneously

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution
Minimum Experience:
  • Experience teaching, tutoring, coaching, or advising high school and/or college students
  • One year experience working with students in a pre-college and/or educational setting
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Experience working with first-generation college and/or low-income students

Expected salary: $20 per hour
