Vanderbilt University Libraries is searching for a Music Librarian for Instruction and Outreach to build the information literacy program and creatively engage campus stakeholder groups with music materials, services, and library expertise. Guided by new strategic initiatives, this position will ensure that the information literacy program and outreach initiatives support the University's commitment to research and teaching.



Through radical collaboration we seek to deepen student and faculty engagement with the libraries, equip students for life-long information proficiency, increase faculty research impact, create more opportunities for interdisciplinary experimentation, and optimize access to collections and resources, including marginalized and hidden histories and cultures. We are seeking a team member to help us educate the next generation of leaders and enable research that solves our most pressing problems. The Music Librarian for Instruction and Outreach works in the Anne Potter Wilson Music Library, one of nine libraries in the Vanderbilt Libraries system. Library staff in the Music Library support the teaching, research, and performance in the Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music. Music Library staff work closely together as a team, and have a shared service model around outreach, instruction, collections and research engagement. This position works directly with the disciplines of music, and we seek candidates with broad knowledge of music and information skills. Responsibilities include library instruction, research assistance, collection development, and academic outreach, including collaborative development of library programs and campus and community engagement initiatives.



This is an excellent environment for new librarians entering the profession as there is a great deal of mentoring and support for professional growth. This is a permanent staff position, with the majority of duties being performed on site. Vanderbilt University is a residential campus for undergraduates, and the residential experience is an important part of the Vanderbilt experience.



Duties and Responsibilities


  • Collaborate with team members to develop and implement a service model for music library users that will result in deep library engagement.

  • Actively engage with faculty and students in their classrooms and offices to bring librarian expertise to users where they work.

  • Develop programs and offerings to provide expert research support at all stages of the research life cycle.

  • Help build and deliver an information literacy program that is integrated into the curriculum to create musicians who are sophisticated users of information.

  • Develop and deliver innovative consultation services drawing on established and emerging research methods.

  • Create LibGuides and tutorials to support online reference and instruction.

  • Coordinate and implement student and faculty outreach events for the Wilson Music Library, and participate in library-wide outreach events and initiatives.

  • Curate local exhibits and participate in the library-wide exhibits program as appropriate.

  • Maintain the Wilson Music Library's social media presence.

  • Plan and implement the use of emerging technologies to enhance the provision of library services.

  • Participate in local and library-wide assessment efforts related to information and digital literacies, reference services, and library collections.

  • Represent the library locally, regionally, and nationally.

  • Actively contributes to the library science profession in the area of music librarianship.

  • Contribute to the development of distinctive, interdisciplinary, multi-format, and intersectional collections that serve the wide-ranging needs of students, musicians, scholars, and researchers

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.

  • Bachelor's degree in Music

  • 0-3 years' experience in an academic research library.

  • Outstanding communication skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively teach and present.

  • Knowledge and/or active interest in using emerging technologies to enhance the delivery of information services.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and changing environment.

The following are preferred:

  • Experience working as a music subject specialist and instruction librarian in an academic research library.

  • Experience using music special collections and primary source materials in classroom instruction and related library activities.

  • Experience supporting digital humanities projects.

  • Experience planning library outreach events and curating exhibits.
