Specialty Doctor - Wisteria Ward
Posted 2025-03-14A unique opportunity has arisen for a part-time permanent Specialty Doctor position to work in a leading child and adolescent eating disorders service. Wisteria Ward national specialist adolescent in-patient eating disorders service is part of the CAMHS eating disorders stream of the South London Partnership (SLP), which combines specialist eating disorder services for all young people across South London and services provided by SWLSTG, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLAM), and Oxleas NHS Trusts.
Suitable applicants will have experience in child and adolescent mental health. Experience with eating disorders and inpatient treatment would be desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job
- The post holder will contribute specialist medical and psychiatric assessment and treatment knowledge and skills and be well supported by their consultant supervisor and other medical colleagues, as well as skilled and enthusiastic psychology & psychotherapy and nursing staff.
- The post holder will need to be a driven, organised individual who works well as part of a team.

Working flexibly can be considered in line with the clinical need of the ward, and the medical cover that can be provided by other doctors. Some SPA time may be able to be done off the ward.

- Wisteria Ward is a 12 bedded national specialist Tier 4 CAMHS Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Unit located at Springfield Hospital, Tooting. Wisteria
- Ward is part of the CAMHS eating disorders stream of the South London Partnership (SLP), which combines specialist eating disorder services for all young people under SWLSTG, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLAM), and Oxleas NHS Trusts. The service accepts local and national referrals and offers inpatient, assessment and consultation by a multi-disciplinary team.
- The Ward works with acutely unwell young people, using an MDT goal-focussed treatment model to support recovery with involvement of all clinical specialties, the young person themselves and their family/carers.
- The team was recently short-listed as 'Clinical Team of the Year' for the Trust Quality Awards, 2021.
About our locations:
Tooting (Wandsworth)
Our Trust headquarters is located within the impressive grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting and we also operate in nearly 100 other locations throughout the UK. This is easily accessible via the Northern Line (Tooting Bec Station) and via private transport. The Trust provides subsidised parking fares for all our substantive staff. Our main site is located immediately next to Tooting High Street where staff can easily access a range of shops, cafs and restaurants.

Job responsibilities
- Participating in joint assessments of the children and adolescents referred to the service, with particular focus on psychiatric and physical assessment.
- Developing and providing treatment plans which include the family/carers and liaison with local services.
- Ensuring the day-to-day psychiatric and medical care of adolescents on the day programme and inpatient unit.
- To safely prescribe to an adolescent population and write up discharge medication as needed.
- Responding at short notice to requests to see patients either individually or jointly with other team members, including performing Mental Health Act assessments.
- Responding to medical and psychiatric emergencies on the ward.
- To function as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team in a professional manner.
- Providing medical advice and support to other disciplines where appropriate.
- To attend and participate in clinical meetings, team meetings and tribunals where appropriate.
- To contribute to multi-disciplinary training events.
- Producing or assisting with the production of reports for the Ministry of Justice, the First Tier Tribunal (Mental Health), care plans or for CPA meetings.
- To produce discharge summaries in a timely manner with formulation input.
- To maintain clinical records in accordance with the GMC and Trust standards, and to adhere to the GMC Code of Conduct.
- To ensure, with other members of the Team, that Care Programmes, and Risk Plans are appropriate and updated and that clinical outcomes are recorded.
- To receive clinical supervision from the Consultant Psychiatrist.
- To communicate with families about patient concerns.
- To work closely with other members of the Team in developing treatment approaches for children, young people and their families.
- To be aware of the statutory requirements of The Children's Act, the Mental Capacity Act and The Mental Health Act.
- When at work on Wisteria Ward, to provide cover on Aquarius and Corner House wards when needed, e.g. their middle grade is on leave, but will be based on Wisteria Ward.
